Featuring Tom Macklin

Tom Macklin

Tom Macklin

A native of Southern California, Tom Macklin began his trumpet education at the age of seven under the instruction of Jimmy Cannon – a former member of the Count Basie Orchestra. While attending the California State University of Long Beach he continued his studies with Joan LaRue and Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Boyd Hood. Mr. Macklin has also studied with world renowned trumpet soloist and composer Anthony Plog.

Hired in 1982 by the Disney Company to perform at EPCOT Center, Mr. Macklin worked there for seventeen years-performing in the groups The Maple Leaf Brass, Future World Brass, and the Magic Kingdom’s World Band. In addition to his duties as a musician he also contributed greatly to those and other Disney groups as an arranger.

In 1994 Tom joined the Orlando Philharmonic’s trumpet section. As a featured soloist, Mr. Macklin has performed the Brandenburg Concerto #2 and the Telemann Concerto in D. He is currently serving his sixth term on the philharmonic’s board of directors.

For the past thirteen years, Mr. Macklin has considered it an honor to be the trumpet professor at Stetson University School of Music in DeLand, Florida. His passion for music education is further fulfilled as a highly sought after clinician, a soloist for Walt Disney’s Magic Music Days program, and with his active private trumpet studio in Orlando.

In the fall of 2007 Tom added the position of Principal Trumpet in the Brevard Symphony Orchestra in Melbourne, Florida to his busy schedule.

As a free-lance musician, Mr. Macklin performs with the brass quintet The Sovereign Brass, is a Warner Brothers recording artist for education materials, and spends his Decembers as a member of Walt Disney World’s Candlelight Orchestra – holding down the position of piccolo trumpet. His performance resume also includes working with Composer/Conductor John Williams, The Woody Herman Orchestra, Maureen McGovern, Branford Marsalis, Duran Duran, Marvin Hamlisch, Joan Rivers, Joshua Bell, Itzhak Perlman, Rosemary Clooney, and playing numerous touring Broadway pit orchestras.

Featuring Alexa Lowrey

AlexaLowreyAlexa Lowrey made her North Port Symphony debut in 2014 where she performed to rave reviews, and is happy and excited to make her fourth appearance with her favorite orchestra.

A native Floridian, Alexa has seemed destined for the stage since she was one year old, when selected out of 50 contestants to be the Ruskin Tomato Queen.  She has been treading the boards ever since.

Now at age 16, she has many roles and titles in her repertoire.  She is a regular at the Patel Conservatory (part of the Straz Performing Arts Center in Tampa), where she has had principal starring roles in the following:  Once Upon a Mattress, A Little Princess, and Thoroughly Modern Millie.  Miss Lowrey has also had featured lead parts in:  Annie, Cinderella, Seussical the Musical, Alice in Wonderland, Beauty and the Beast, The Music Man, The Little Mermaid, Oklahoma, and Into The Woods.

Alexa has performed in two professional Operas, Carmen and La Boheme, in which she was selected by the Maestro to be the featured children’s soloist in the famous Café Scene.  She was also chosen to give an introduction speech for the touring Broadway show The Addams Family.

She has mastered a very difficult song, Our National Anthem (Star Spangled Banner), and was asked to sing it numerous times for the Lakeland Flying Tigers minor league baseball team.

Alexa attends Tampa Preparatory School where she is active in all things music.  Through the Tampa Prep Chorus, she has achieved multiple Superior ratings in solo competitions, and, as a Seventh Grader, she was chosen as the judges’ favorite in the high-school category.   She has been in All-State chorus two years so far, and has travelled with her school chorus to take part in the famous Candlelight Concerts at EPCOT Center, as well as getting to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City.   At Tampa Prep, she recently had a lead role in the musical “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” and played a homeless drug addict in their February, 2016 production of “Rent.”.  This past year she was featured in a musical version of Jane Eyre and The Addams Family, The Musical.

In her continuing efforts to become a “triple-threat,” Alexa also takes dance lessons (especially Tap) and studies Voice and Piano privately with acclaimed Tampa teacher, Melody Feist.

In addition to her whirlwind schedule, Alexa has still been able to maintain a GPA well above 4.0, and recognizes that academic success goes hand-in-hand with all other goals and achievements.  She also wants to especially thank her mom for her tireless effort and support.
